Remove old CD Key code

Submitted by Wadiv on Sat, 2006-12-09 22:22. Space Empires V General

When Space Empires first came out I installed my roommates copy while waiting for mine to arrive by mail. I only reinstalled it a few weeks ago but was never asked to re-enter my key. I've tried uninstalling my copy and re-installing a second time tonight and still I don't get asked to set the new key.

Does anyone know how to remove the old key from a system? If not can Malfador please make sure that the uninstall removes the old key during uninstallation?

Yaaarrrr, ye be a pirate matey! Live with it! Laughing out loud

Or, more seriosly, I don't think you're going to get dinged for it simply because the CD key isntalled on your computer doesn't match the one in your hand. You have a valid CD key, that should be all you need.

I know my brother and I have have had... issues in the past with getting our keys mixed up (on other games), never caused us problems Laughing out loud

Well the reason I was trying

Submitted by Wadiv on Sun, 2006-12-10 12:38.

Well the reason I was trying to update it with my key is because we recently decided to give multiplayer a shot. After all the bugs in the beginning it didn't make any sense to try. I was kind of waiting for the next patch release anyway. We had trouble starting a game up last night and I wanted to rule out the issue of conflicting cd keys, I don't know if Malfador put that type of check in, but I wanted to rule it out.

Which root folder?

This sounds like a solution to a problem that I have....

I just bought and installed SEV last weekend and I've already lost the paper sleeve with the key sticker on it. The game is still installed so I was hoping that I could find the key inside the installed folders somewhere.

The CD Key in encrypted form (well, it is just a LONG number) is stored in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Malfador Machinations\Space Empires V

Delete the entry for "CD Data" and you are asked to enter the CD key again the next time you start SEV. Smiling

Why the hell doesn't the uninstall remove that key from the registry? I hate programs that don't clean up after themselves...thats just sloppy.

Perhaps it is to ease the frustration of reinstallling the game, or giving you a way to recover your key without the paper sleeve...much worse IMO is the practice of putting CD's in paper sleeves to save $.03 per copy produced. I just payed $xx.xx for your game, give me a real cd jewel...I won't hurt myself with it, I promise.
