Tech Tree Editor |

I would like to see someone put out a tool for modifying the tech tree, somewhat like space Empires III had.
Wouldn't be too hard
I pulled up the files from the Demo. It really wouldn't be too hard to write a program that pulls it all in and allows you to modify it in a simple GUI. Now programming it to do error checking and the like would be a pain. If people are really interested I'll put together a program for it.

Re: Tech Tree Editor
have you tried this http://www.devnullsoftware.com/se5/ ?
its outdated (v1.17) but i found it still works wonder to help modding

Re: Tech Tree Editor
Yeah devunulls editor is nice, it does have some problems with formulas, and he stopped working on it since the SEV patch 1.17 came out. So if someone wanted to take up the torch of making a new editor, or continuting his work, it might be a good thing.
Re: Tech Tree Editor
when i contacted him about the editor he actually said i was free to develop it further, though i have no clue of programming ^^
so i guess it would be ok for someone to go on with it, but for etiquette devnull should be asked by that given person before that
edit: starcrusade maybe you could? since you almost volunteered ^^
Re: Tech Tree Editor
According to the license he used, Devnull planned ahead, and everyone is already granted such permission:
"Permission is granted to use, distribute, modify, etc any of this
code under the terms of the Common Public License. "
Re: Tech Tree Editor
oh you see sometimes its really easy
hehe maybe MM will release a full fledged editor at one time, it would be great to have something akin to rpg maker i just love that tool and wished something similar for a space opera game will be released someday
imho very much of the appeal of se5 is, is massive modability
Re: Tech Tree Editor
While I think it's nice when larger gaming houses produce tools for the community, for a company MM's size (population: 1?) I'd prefer MM concentrates on the core stuff - squashing bugs, adding more extensibility to the core game code, making the thing more playable out of the box. (read: AI that actually, you know, plays)
The 3rd party community is quite capable of coming up with tech editors, map makers, stuff like that. And from what I've seen, 3rd party tools are usually better than what a company would do because they're made by the people who would use them - nothing better for development ideas than that! Most of the little tools that have been programmed here at work, that everybody uses now, started out as the programmer saying, "I need a quick, easy way to do __________." ...and now those tools are often easier, quicker and more configurable than the full-blown app that we'd paid tens of thousands for.

Re: Tech Tree Editor
"tens of thousands for" - holy cats man!
SEV, more than a feeling.
Re: Tech Tree Editor
No kidding. 2001, before my time...between the cost of the server to run the thing on and the insane cost of the software (and a service contract that, near as I can tell, has had $0 value return over the years) they blew more money than they have spent on IT in all the years since combined.
Accounting software is a racket. Inventory control software is a racket. This suite does both...in a mediocre manner...glad I'm not the one who has to actually do inventory stuff with it though!

Re: Tech Tree Editor
By the way, I have a new version of the editor up.

as well as a new mod.
Enjoy!

Notepad works pretty good. I
Notepad works pretty good. I really liked how SE4 dumped the crufty editor and made everything plain text. The SE3 editor was terrible; nowhere was a delete button to be found.
