Where does one start with modding?

dwiebe18's picture
Submitted by dwiebe18 on Tue, 2006-09-26 20:14. SE:V MODs

I am extremely interested in getting into modding Space Empires IV and even V, but to be frank I have no idea where to start.

I dont know what sorts of programs I should have to make shipset models, I'm planning on reading the tutorials for modding the game, but I just wanted advice on where others think I should start.

Few Quick Tips

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Tue, 2006-09-26 21:45.

Notepad or equivalents work well for editing the data files, although there are some programs that can help if you're more visual. For SE:IV, pretty much any 3d software can make nice renders for shipsets. For SE:V, you'll need a program that export or convert to .X file models.

Before starting any large mod, I always recommend a starting excel spreadsheet for planning.

Excel won't help you make the files, just organize what you want to do. Smiling

As for programs, you don't need any special programs unless you want to edit the graphics.

I personally use Wings3d and Lithunwrap to make ships; both are free.

Start here:
SE:IV Modding Tutorial

This will help you understand how things work in the data files for SE:IV, which in turn gives you a good grip on the SE:V data files.

I don't expect much from the demo, but will there be an explanation of the formulas used for components and facilities?

From the formulars in the demo data files they are pretty straight forward. The componants and facilities simply level up by a certain amount for every tech level.

Modding the Scripts

Submitted by jowe01 on Tue, 2006-10-31 15:53.

I would also like to take a shot at the scripts. In particular, I would like to change the research priorities for a new race I am designing.

Could anybody point me to a quick "how to" guide and a programm to edit the script files? I do need to edit the script files to change research priorities, don't I? there is no text file which does it like in SE4?

The scripts are compiled .txt files, which are included along with the compiler.

Go to SE5\Utilities\ScriptParser.

BTW, make a backup of the SE5EmpireScripts and SE5MainScripts before you go messing with them.

Bumping an 8 month old, completely unrelated thread for the wrong game is fairly inappropriate. Please go make a new thread in the appropriate SE4 forum.

As well as the fact that, that by posting your email address, it indicates you are too lazy to even look back into a thread to see if any help has been offered
(Not to mention the fact that bots will proberly now farm the email for spam)

There are SE4 general and SE4 mods sections. Pick one and post a new thread. Please stop posting in dead, 8 month old threads.
