( 1.17 ) 12 engines, 6 moves? No fullscreen ATI

Submitted by Hot-Rod-Lincoln on Mon, 2006-12-04 17:58. Bug Reports

Ok, so I have 3 bugs to report. the first one is the one I hate most. Say you had a cruiser or any other ship with max engines, say 12, and you get badly damaged in a fight. Sometimes if you repaired it to 100% it would had 12 working engines, use 12 engines worth of supplies but only move 6 spaces per turn. It really bothers me when people put my **** back together with BONDO and DUCT TAPE.......

The second one is pretty simple. So far I have learned that if you have an ATI based video card (not sure what others) you cannot use PRIMARY DISPLAY DRIVER in the settings menu. If you do, it will go fullscreen but....... it will flash so bad that You may have a massive siezure. So you will have to use the ATI driver option instead. This option works on ATI cards but only in windowed mode. TRUST ME I have tried this on multiple computers ranging from Rage 128 pro to Radeon 9000 - 9800 to X-Series X600-X800. I just wish it worked fullscreen, yaknow?

Thirdly, forget closing you laptop lid, going into hibernate or standby, or just letting the screensaver come on. All of these will cause a violent crash, maybe it is because of the ATI issues but be careful.

Ok, thats my rant for the day, try testing some of these. Have fun Smiling

Confirmed the 6 / 12 bug

Submitted by obliwobly on Wed, 2006-12-06 13:58.

I just found the same bug in 1.17, here is a clue to the cause and a workaround, it persists until the ship is fully refueled at a repair base during the end of turn and then goes away again and the ship gets max movement back.

I think it happens to me when I upgrade to higher capacity engines and it depletes the planet supplies, its as if it only fills up half the engines and those are the only ones which work.

However if you add more supplies by cargo transfer it does not help restore movement in fact it blocks it and it never repairs to full movement. To get full movement you have to let the ship refuel itself at a planet with repair facillity during the turn processing.

PS I am sorry to upset the applecart here, but I am playing full screen mode with an ATI dx9 SmartShader2 part (X850XT PE) using primary display driver, 1280x1024 32bit, D3D T&L HAL, memory auto, graphic detail max, background detail max. Its not flickering.

Half movement

Submitted by RogerN on Wed, 2006-12-06 14:36.

My only experience with half movement (5 out of 10) turned out to be a crew problem.

At first I was very confused; my ships were fully repaired and had plenty of supplies, but they were only getting half of their movement points every turn. Eventually I noticed that they didn't have any crew members on board. Apparently I'd retrofitted the ships at a shipyard with a different race of aliens, and they couldn't crew the ship.

The problem went away when I moved the ship to a planet with the correct race of aliens. The ship automatically refilled its crew.

If anything, there needs to be a status icon indicating that a ship is suffering penalties due to crew problems.

I am having no probs using

Submitted by cordas on Wed, 2006-12-06 14:36.

I am having no probs using an ATI 9800 pro with cat 6.10 drivers I run in 1152 x 864 32 bit colour and full screen with no probs. Have you tried updating your drivers (or downgrading them if you have the latest).

As for the movement bug, I have experienced this in a number of games and ain't sure what the problem is, I am sorry I have to disagree with obliwobly as I don't think that has applied in situations I have found.... It really has me stumped. (I have upgraded 2 ships same version to the same new version on my homeworld with plenty of supplies and had one upgrade fine and the other loose half its movement)

Doh I feel so stupid, yes I

Doh I feel so stupid, yes I think that accounts for it, but really why ? Why does your old crew suddenly cease to exist ? Especially when races seem to migrate in SE5 and whats more if you build a new ship at a planet with a conquered race it has a full crew compliment of your start race.

Because the game is partially bugged Laughing out loud

Actually, I think the problem primarily occurs when damage (including retrofit damage) occurs to life support / living quarters. If their damaged, no one can live on board, so no more crew.

The starport scenes in Star Wars might give a good hint as to why they might cease to exist: they are "sailors" after all. Smiling

Why one couldn't find replacements for hire.. now that's another question.
