Is there Artificial World construction in SEV?

darkus's picture
Submitted by darkus on Tue, 2006-09-26 18:10. Space Empires V FAQs

Has there been any info released about it?
By Artificial Worlds I of course mean Dyson Rings and Spheres. I haven’t seen any screenshots of those and a forum search didn’t come up with anything conclusive.

You said once that they will

Submitted by ekolis on Tue, 2006-09-26 18:21.

You said once that they will occupy multiple sectors, right? Will it be possible to colonize each sector of a ringworld or sphereworld separately, or will it be colonized as a whole? I ask this because if it's the former, I'd like to use that mechanic for the 21st Century Mod which will have planets instead of stars at the center of each system... Eye-wink

Great

Submitted by darkus on Tue, 2006-09-26 19:38.

Great news! Nothing is better than some Megastructure goodness to spice up your Homeworld System Eye-wink

Any word on other possible Colossal Projects? Perhaps facilities that take up a large portion of a planet? The new facility size and planetary capacity properties seem to be hinting on possibility of structures larger than 1000kT

Occupy 6 rings

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Tue, 2006-09-26 21:41.

I believe the Ring/Sphere Worlds occupy the inner 6 rings. And you can only build them in systems with one star.

Ringworld Screenshot?

Submitted by darkus on Wed, 2006-09-27 07:10.

6 hexes in diameter - that’s awesome! But then what happens to planets which are closer than 6 hexes to the sun? There is plenty of those, in the demo anyway.

Any chance of posting a screenshot of a ring/sphere world?

I think that if you look

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Wed, 2006-09-27 07:15.

I think that if you look closely at the star, the star itself seems to occupy the six hexes that they are talking about, there is a definitly not only one.

Ringworlds

Submitted by darkus on Wed, 2006-09-27 07:45.

Well, to me "occupying the 6 inner rings" means an object with a *diametre* of 6 hexes.

Not to mention that currently Suns occupy an *area* of 7 hexes

A very good point

Submitted by dwiebe18 on Wed, 2006-09-27 07:53.

Thats something I actually noticed after my post, I have a theory though so not to worry, they say a ring world will occupy 6 hexes yes, well a ring world does still have a bit of a glowy sun left in the middle of it does it not. I assume that the 7th center hex would still be reserved for that. Probably also true for a sphereworld although you couldnt really go in and check.

It would be cool if you could slap a sphereworld on a supernova. An entire sector as a colony.

Planets etc. that get in the way are consumed by the process.

I'll see if I can get permission to post a screenshot of the item in question. Sticking out tongue

Submitted by darkus on Wed, 2006-09-27 13:15.

That would be awesome, thanks Kwok!

Why would you need to ask permission? Haven’t they removed the NDA's after the game went Gold?

Another question – can ships travel through the centre of ring worlds? …sort of like they can move in between the 2 suns in a Binary System? Or do they have to fly all the way around the ring to get from one end of the system to the other?

The Sphereworld pic (look in

Submitted by ekolis on Wed, 2006-09-27 15:53.

The Sphereworld pic (look in your planets directory under pictures or images) has a big gate on it... perhaps only ships allied to the ring/sphere's owner can pass?

Can you visit the planet from more than one hex?

Facilities

Submitted by darkbeholder on Sat, 2006-10-07 18:06.

Well just like in SEIV you can have 100 facilities (undomed) and yes you can visit from any of the edge hexes. I havent experienced combat on a ringworld yet so i don't know if there is any difference in which hex you are on.

Ring Appearance

Submitted by darkbeholder on Sat, 2006-10-07 18:40.

Other rings look better. The ring's inner appearance changes based on planet type and atmostphere. Gas C02 is rather boring. Look in the pictures folder to see the other (i think the demo had the pictures with it but i removed the demo when I installed the full version)

Ringworld Screenshot

Submitted by darkus on Sat, 2006-10-07 19:20.

That's awesome, thanks darkbeholder! How about a Sphere world screenshot? Smiling

Looks much better than in SEIV, that's for sure... that said, the fact that it's not centered on the Star is a little annoying, but Im sure it's due to some game engine limitation. And as it was already mentioned, the texture could use some detail work... something about a giant blurry smudge that doesn't do it for me Sticking out tongue

As far artificial world capacities go, they can be found in "PlanetSize.txt" and they are as follows:
. . . . . Pop. . . Facil. . . Cargo. . Supply . Ord
Ring. . . 32000. . 100000 . . 128000 . 320000 . 320000
Sphere. . 64000. . 200000 . . 256000 . 640000 . 640000

and that right there is why u want to rotate the system map, that would be hard to see around. Could you imagine the gravitational pull of that thing? It would be hard enough to break free of the stars gravity, never mind adding who know how much additional mass to the mix.

Thanks for the Picture

Submitted by StarHunter5 on Sun, 2006-10-08 17:49.

Tho, If with the star where it is, the gravitional forces would tear this ring world apart.
In one of Larry Nivins later books the ring world had jets to adjust the orbit and when the star was no longer in the gravitional center it threaten to destroy the ring world.
So, there is no way that a ring world that had the star in that position would be able to survive.

small problem

Submitted by Shayvaan on Tue, 2006-10-10 19:54.

I've been trying to build a sphereworld, where do I put the starbases with the components? I put them as close as I could to the star, but when I target the spherewold generator and tell it to build it does nothing.

P.S. and yes, there is only one star in the system Smiling

Baseships

Submitted by darkbeholder on Tue, 2006-10-10 19:58.

It seems that you need to have atleast 1 movement to do the construction so you need to use baseships instead of starbases.

Submitted by Rilbur on Tue, 2006-10-10 23:32.

And by the time you have access to unobtanium in quantities necessary to create a sphereworld, I bet you have access to artificial heating sufficent to keep the other planets alive.

There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Just a thought... a

Submitted by VirulentShadow on Thu, 2006-10-12 11:14.

Just a thought... a supernova is an expulsion of gas from a giant star... the remaining core would be a neutron star which is about the size of Earth... so that wouldn't make any sense... the remaining gas forms a planetary nebula and wouldn't have the kind of structure to power a Dyson Sphere

Colonise

Submitted by darkbeholder on Sat, 2006-10-14 00:31.

Just send your colony ship to colonise another outer hex of the sphere. I found that sometimes it just didnt like a hex and I could get it to colonise the current hex but ordering it to colonise the next hex worked.
