crash in tutorial

Submitted by leftydad on Sat, 2006-12-02 13:07. Space Empires V General

I just got the game and am using the 1.17 patch.

I began by playing the tutorial. Following the steps in the tutorial, after I design my frigate (“Explorer”) and return to the main screen, I click on the CONSTRUCT button (wrench icon), and my computer reboots.

Any suggestions?

Leftydad

Check

Check your drivers.

Also, FYI, I'm willing to bet your computer isn't actually rebooting. Right click on "my computer", properties, go to advanced, startup and recovery, advanced, and unclick automaticly restart. You are almost certianly getting a blue-screen error, and, unfortunatly, XP by default simply restarts the computer automaticly.

Post the text of the blue screen error and we'll know more about the problem (assuming it isn't fixed when you check your drivers -- I bet you have an out of date driver somewhere). If updated drivers doesn't seem to be the problem, post a DXdiag here along with the text of the BSOD.

Blue Screen: my video drivers were TOO NEW

Submitted by leftydad on Sun, 2006-12-03 12:30.

Thank you for the advice about the “BLUE SCREEN.” I had a “NV4_disp.dll” problem. I think, though, that my problem wasn’t that my video drivers were too old, it was that they were too new. I was using the very latest Nvidia Forceware display drivers, 93.71, off the Nvidia website. I went back to 84.21, and I don’t have the problem any more.

So, the problem seems to have been that my display drivers were too new.

Thanks, Leftydad

Too New

I wouldn't go quite that far back, unless your card has compatibility issues (my old PCI (not PCI-E) based Geforce 6200 wouldn't run well except under 84.21, IIRC... thank god I junked it!).
