PBW now supporting SE5

Submitted by geoschmo on Tue, 2006-11-28 09:10. Space Empires V Multiplayer

Hey all, I've added SE5 support to PBW. Currently it supports version 1.17 stock only. We're kind of in the testing phases at this point so consider it a beta and treat it accordingly. Feel free to add a game and kick the tires. I would suggest if yo uare going to do any serious competative games that you keep backups of your .gam files offline in case we have to de-support it at any time so yo ucan keep your game going. Let me know if you run into any problems. http://seiv.pbw.cc

Once I'm confident it's going to work smoothly I'll update the PBW site some. Perhaps I can setup a separate site for SE5 running on the same server. sev.pbw.cc? Smiling

PBW is pretty long in the tooth and eventually I can see it being replaced. Until that happens though I figured I should try to keep it running the most current version of the game.

The goal here isn't to wipe out the pbftp that SE5a has setup or anything like that. I like his idea about distributed processing. I've been pushing something like that for the next version of PBW myself, I'm just not quite up to the skills neccesary to do it. Mainly I wanted to see if I could make the changes needed to get SEV to work on the server and it seems too.

Curently SEV has no command line parameter option for mod support the way SEIV does, so I'm only supporting stock 1.17 at the moment. I've already talked to Malfador and they have plans to implement that in a future patch so we can try supporting user submitted mods at a later date.

As a newbie to SE, I have to

Submitted by Gusset on Fri, 2006-12-01 21:18.

As a newbie to SE, I have to say that PBW isn't a half bad way to play a game. The file transfer tasks aren't too tedious, though it would be nice to have a program or script of some sort that would automatically check the PBW site to see if a new turn is available, download if so, and unzip it.

In any event, though, PBW seems to work pretty well for playing a game.

Can any PBW vets give me an idea of what a good pace is for playing a game, in terms of number of turns per day?

PBW

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Fri, 2006-12-01 22:06.

It's usually a turn every 48 hrs or so with moderately sized games. Games with fewer players tend to go faster. A turn-fest between a few players can get many turns in at once.

There was a real-time client for pbw that downloaded your turn when it was available and stuff like that. It should be adaptable for SE:V pbw once the command line functions are added.

Kwok Stock I PBW

Submitted by crward on Sat, 2006-12-02 13:59.

Looked at your site. Not sure what to make of it or how to get SE:V up and running. Is there a useful set of instructions that could get a new player on board?

... [edited} Ah.. ok.. Text based is the correct branch...

So I just signed up for Kwok Stock I. In real time, it Looks like there are 5 players including myself signed up to kick the PBW game around.... Looking forward to seeing it run.

PBW with SE5

Submitted by XXDarrienX on Sun, 2006-12-03 23:34.

Well after seeing this a group of friends of mine decide to try it, whenever the PBW client tries to load Se5 automatically, it loads then crashes, one friend suggested we rename the Se5.exe to Se4.exe but the same result does anyone that already had a game going know what you did to get the client to run normally?

RTC & SE:V

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Mon, 2006-12-04 19:30.

The real-time client doesn't work with SE:V, because it doesn't have the command line parameters added yet. Anyway, it's not required to play SE:V on PBW - you can just as easily d/l the .gam file when it's available.

RTC works ?

Submitted by Sturmer on Mon, 2006-12-04 20:58.

I just renamed Se5.exe to Se4.exe and the RTC works with Se5 for me. Don't ask me how, but it does.

RTC Works?

Submitted by geoschmo on Wed, 2006-12-06 13:45.

When you say the RTC works, do you mean it actually launches directly into your turn, or it just pulls up the SE5 application? It should not "work" the way it's supposd too without the needed command line parameters. Are you familier with using RTC in SE4 games? In those it will actually launch you right into your game turn, and then upload your .plr file for yo uwhen yo uhit end turn. I can't imagine it does thos now for Se5 just by renamign the .exe file. I am guessing what you mean by "works" is it launches the SE5.exe and then waits for you to hit load game and select your .gam file.

Although, it may go as far as downloading the current turn. I suppose that's helpful to a point. But I think you'll be pleasantly suprised to see RTC in full action once we get the needed command line parameters and tweak the RTC code to take advantage of them.

The client will load the Se5

Submitted by Sturmer on Thu, 2006-12-07 00:58.

The client will load the Se5 start menu (Play, Setup, Read Me, etc..) then I select play. When the game loads I simply click resume game, select my empire, type in my password and I'm able to play. When I'm done with my turn the client then uploads the turn to the server for me.

So yes, it's not exactly like Se4 was in bringing you straight to your turn, but it's pretty close. I do look forward to your new RTC client however!
