SEIV vs. SEV

Submitted by robbmiller on Fri, 2006-11-24 15:02. Space Empires V General

I just purchased SEV from EB. I comes with SEIV Deluxe. My question is, is SEV stable enough to play now, or should I play around with SEIV for a while? I am new to the SE Universe, but am familiar with other 4X games (MOOII, CIV2).

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

it really depends on your definition of "stable"
but yea, balance mod is far far better than stock and should give you a better game vs the AI or annother player.

Definition of "Stable"

Submitted by robbmiller on Fri, 2006-11-24 17:02.

My definition of stable is that the game does not crash 5 hours into building and loose all of my work. I don't mind misplaced, dialogs and such; unrecoverable crashes are a hastle.

Thanks again for you help. I will look for the 'balance' mod.

It's unfortunately relative

Some people even with the latest patch are reporting crashes. Some have had no trouble what-so-ever with even the unpatched game. The latest patch does appear to fix the majority of crashable issues for a good percentage of us playing, but your personal mileage may vary.

The game can and should be

The game can and should be set to autosave every turn, so crashes or hanging processing are largely minor nuisances.

Play SE4 First

Submitted by Omnius on Tue, 2006-11-28 10:12.

robbmiller,
I got the same deal a while back. I played with SE4 first to get my feet wet in the SE world and it was enjoyable to play a finished game. Everything works fine in SE4 and it will give you a good foundation for playing SE5. Hopefully in another few patches SE5 will be very stable and everything will work properly.

SEV is Stable

Submitted by evilginger on Tue, 2006-11-28 10:35.

SEV is stable as it generally won’t crash in normal use. There are some crash bugs about but they don’t seem to affect every one. the only one I have ever reproduced is the Aliance chambers crash. There are also a few things which are not working as that are supposed to and a couple of things which are bugs but which some people don’t like but the balance mod is a fix for most of those. SEIV looks a lot more primitive but it’s finished and has all the bells and whistles in place. It also has a good selection of mods out there as would be expected as it’s a mature product. By comparison SEV is very new

SEIV SEV mods etc

Submitted by robbmiller on Wed, 2006-11-29 21:13.

Being brand new, I wouldn't even know where to start with mods... I plan to get there, that was one of the more attractive aspects of the game. Is the SEIV "stock" experience much different than the SEV "stock" experience?

I have tried 3 games and all have crashed after the first 5 years (50 turns). I am using 1.17 from Steam... so I'd not recommend SE-V at least until the next few patches.

Balance Mod is alright, kind

Balance Mod is alright, kind of kills the fun with certain things.

Allowable weight onto ships has been lowered and etc.

Just patch to 1.17 and play

Submitted by Bolter on Thu, 2006-11-30 16:23.

Just patch to 1.17 and play SEV.

It may hang-up on turn processing once every 50 turns or so, but saving often makes that into a minor nuisance only.

I'd suggest you get the stock experience before you start playing mods. That way, you'll know what your're gaining as well as missing with a mod.

SEIV gold vs. SEV "stock"

Submitted by robbmiller on Fri, 2006-12-01 15:16.

What I was wondering is if the SEIV stock expeience is vastly different from the SEV stock experience?

For examble, I had not played "Worms" until the 3d versions had come out. If I had started the series by playing worms 3d, I would never have given the other titles in the series a chance -- the 2d versions are much better (I still love them).

Is there something I'm missing by not playing SEIV?

SEIV Vs. SEV

Submitted by Rilbur on Fri, 2006-12-01 18:07.

By playing SEIV, you're going to get to see the sheer depth of modibility this game has, and exactly how polished it will become.

In short, I don't think you'll miss much that you won't get just by sticking with SEIV for a few years.
