I think that if the tech is

I think that if the tech is either unobtainable by you (i.e. organic and you don't have that racial trait) you will not be able to analyze the components for the research; also - you will not gain any research for parts you have the tech levels for already, or for those (I believe) that are in a completely un-researched tree (i.e. if you haven't put any points into Astrophysics and haven't opened Stellar Manipulation then you won't get research on any stellar manipulation components analyzed).

When you select a ship to analyze it should tell you its 'Research Value' which varies from 'none' to 'exceptional'.

It does

At various times, when I have maxed resources, I analyze my own ships rather than scrap them. It does tell me that the expected research gain is "none", and I would expect that it reports something else when you can get tech from a ship.

Not working for me.

I have captured ships with tech higher than mine. DU gun 5, Ship size Cr, Missles 5. I have level 1 in all of these items and the result were "None". I also captured a colony ship with a gas compoent and got a "none" result.
