Problems Upgrading Engines

cordas's picture
Submitted by cordas on Fri, 2006-11-24 08:15. Space Empires V General

I am not sure what has happened here but I have sudenly had some upgraded ships lose half their speed. This has happened in 2 seperate games (both using 1.17 games)

1. I have upgraded a ship to a new version using Quantum Engines 5 rather than QE1, I have also added to this ship a solar sail (only signifcant change other than updating older techs) I have the racial speed bonus as well, and my Crusier design has gone from having speed 16 to having speed 8.

However for some bizarre reason this isn't even consistant, as a couple of ships still has speed 16 when upgraded.

2. New game / empire (still having the racial speed bonus) I have had the same problems going from Jacketed Proton Engines (lvl 5) to Quantum Engines (lvl2). This time I wasn't using solar sails and still had speed 8.

In both cases new built ships are OK, its just ships that get upgraded.

Have found a fix for this of

Submitted by cordas on Fri, 2006-11-24 12:44.

Have found a fix for this of sorts..... When you see a ship that has speed 8 when it should be faster save and exit the game, then reload.

This sometimes works and sometimes doesn't *GRRR*

Submitted by se5a on Fri, 2006-11-24 13:50.

when this happens, try using the ~recalc "cheat"
I'll be interested to see if that fixes the problem... (suposedly it does the same as reloading)

Upgrading engine problem:

Submitted by rms1954 on Fri, 2006-11-24 15:12.

Cordas. Check the number of crew after the refit. It will most likely be zero for the ships that have reduced movement. They were most likely refitted at a planet that was composed of a different population than that of the crew (your native population). I don't know if this is by design or a bug.

what is the recalc cheat and

Submitted by cordas on Fri, 2006-11-24 15:46.

what is the recalc cheat and how do I do it?

As for numbers of crew I will check, but the refits have been done on planets that are inhabbited by my "home" race. I doubt its by design.

Recalc cheat

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Fri, 2006-11-24 15:55.

Type ~recalc~ - it recalculates all the requirements/formulae etc. for items in the game.

Not sure how to get into

Submitted by cordas on Sat, 2006-11-25 07:16.

Not sure how to get into cheat mode. I am using a UK keyboard and layout where the tilde ~ function is a "shift #" doing this makes no difference to the game and doesn't allow me to enter codes.

I think the root of the problem is something to do with Quantum engines and upgrades, I am having the same problems upgrading other components but not the engines in ships with QEs.

i.e. My current problems involve a weapons (proton beams 9 - 11), scanners (basic 11 - 12), defense (ecm 1 - 7) and suppiles (ord and supplies 1 - 7) on ships with quantum engines (these are staying the same). The ships speed changes from the should be 16 to 8.

I have upgraded all these features before (some in a couple of games) and the only time I have these problems is when my ships are using Quantum Engines. I habitually have the racial speed bonus.

the ' works Smiling Cheers for that. However recalc doesn't fix the engine / speed problem.

I've seen this also

Submitted by jacob4408 on Mon, 2006-11-27 11:42.

Had some upgraded ships with movement of 7 when should have been 15. It was an older fleet that was in R&R anyway so I just scrapped the ships and replaced them with new ones. Don't have the save game anymore to send in or I would.

Are you playing sequential

Submitted by se5a on Mon, 2006-11-27 13:25.

Are you playing sequential or similtanious turn based games?

Are you the FIRST empire in the list, or are you second, third, or something else?

Something similar happened

Submitted by Sir Whiskers on Mon, 2006-11-27 20:44.

Something similar happened to me in my last game. I sent one ship back to a space yard, refitted it to another design, then refitted it back to the original design. After it finished repairing, it had full speed again.

The other two ships were so far from a space yard, I just destroyed them and moved on.

Half Speed Retrofits

Submitted by Rilbur on Mon, 2006-11-27 22:32.

Half speed retrofit ships is a "known issue". Ships loose all their crew when they're retrofit, and if they aren't over a "native" planet, they don't get 'em back.

Yep, that's it. My work

Submitted by jacob4408 on Tue, 2006-11-28 17:44.

Yep, that's it. My work around has been to build a ship with space yard component then have that ship travel with the fleet. I can retrofit on the fly and not have to worry about finding a planet in reasonable distance with both a space yard AND native race population. Takes longer but, hey, everything in life is a tradeoff.

I've also experienced this

Submitted by Shrike on Tue, 2006-11-28 18:25.

I've also experienced this bug. Strangely enough, one or more turns later, my retrofitted ships finally had the movement points they were supposed to have. Not yet at quantum engines, so I doubt it's got anything to do with that I also think it may even vary between various individual ships, so some get the bug and others don't, while all upgrading to the same new ship type ...

Repair also has the same problem

Submitted by TakAhLah on Thu, 2006-11-30 06:33.

I have found the same problem but with repair, as I was avoiding retrofit because of this problem.

I was reparing some ships that had just been in combat and once they were all ready to go I moved them only to find that one of the ships had had its movement reduced to 5. I checked to make sure it was 100% repaired...it was and I then noticed that its crew was 0 of 200...Doh

The ships were using the first type of engine in the game...don't remember its name. I'll try the recal fix when I get home...God! work just so gets in the way of things!

I have experienced this

Submitted by cordas on Sat, 2006-12-02 06:05.

I have experienced this problem when upgrading at planets that have my native population, where sometimes a ship will go fine and others not. I have also had ships upgrade fine at planets without any native population.

I have a feeling it might be to do with upgrading crew quaters and life support systems.
