Adding a New Race to the Old Ones

Scillion's picture
Submitted by Scillion on Tue, 2006-11-21 11:14. SE:V MODs

I didn't see any other posts about adding another race to the list. If there is one I apologize.

I got the 1.17 version and wanted to play so I need to change the empires back to normal. I had been testing a model I made. I got some errors that I had to fix that lead me to this discovery.

1. I had my Abbidon folder and a modded Abbidon folder(I called the unused one abbidontest). I changed the modded Abbidon folder to Bbbidon.

2. Then I changed the name of every Abbidon file in the Bbbidon folder to Bbbidon and Abb to bbb.

3. Then I went into every .txt file and changed all Abb to Bbb. (I used REPLACE in notepad).

I didn't really think it would work, Imagine my surprise when I found a new race under New Game. It looked just like Abbidon.

I played a game with this (modded) Abbidon race. My model was there. It worked. I now have two seperate races.

Not fully tested but this should get people started.

We've known it was completly possible. People are already working on new ship sets...

You're new to the SE series, aren't you? This existed in SEIV too Laughing out loud

Thats ok, we can let this one slip down the forum Pipeline

Submitted by Scillion on Tue, 2006-11-21 12:45.

But know that I couldn't find anything on the (SE V mod) forum about this (adding too instead of replaceing). Us new people need to know some of the things that the veterans take for granted.

I know that... problem was, I wasn't sure why youd didn't know already; the ability is implicit in the way the stuff is set up (or I thought it was).

I'm just a little off at times, my mistake Laughing out loud

The real news here is that

Submitted by Rilo57 on Sun, 2006-11-26 12:27.

The real news here is that "replace" feature in notepad. Those time saving features are the ones that we all need to know about! It's like the program that devnull is making, the editor. it's a big time saver.

Thank you to all who are spending time providing adjunctive software to speed up the mod community.

This game is modular...

The great fun about SE5 is that you can add content with ease... New race, new weapons, new devices, new scripts. Almost anything in fact.

Not having the same easy expirience

Submitted by konrad on Wed, 2006-12-06 21:19.

I downloaded a Race file with ship graphics and all Txt
files correctly Named.

I tried placing it in the Empires directory to no effect
the new race is stil not available from inside the gamee.

Any suggestions on how to work out what could be going
wrong would be greatly appriciated.

game type

Submitted by azacool89 on Wed, 2006-12-06 22:55.

try adding a game type. put nothing in it but the description and let the normal races in. then creat a empire folder in the new game type and put you new race in it. it seems to work or stuff up in some mods. in mine i had to turn off normal races as it added 2 of each race. it happens for the balace mod on my pc. unless there are some bug in my pc.

Check out my wiki entry

Submitted by maran on Thu, 2006-12-07 04:00.

Check out my wiki entry under AI and Script editing Smiling

If you just want the shipset/graphics they should display as normal in your creation screen, it could however be set as non player selectable, in which case I think they will be missing.

You will see that the only way to truly add a new race (not just graphics and ships) but the brain, its speech files and such is to let the computer randomly add it. I move out all the empire directories (from the empire directory) I don't want in the game and edit my settings file, set the max and min number of empires to the same value and thus have exactly the empires and players I wish in.

As I said its in the wiki.

-EDIT
As azacool89 said you can just set these races up in the mod directory and select the mod you want.
