Patch 117 CTD

After installing the 117 patch the game noew crashes during the race setup phase. I can no longer play at all.

Do you load a saved Race

Do you load a saved Race file? i produced a crash when i wanted to use an saved race from the earlier patchlevel. And maybe its not a good idea to switch race files from a mod with the stock game, but i dont know if this could cause problems (i would think so)

I also produced several crashes using an empire file I created under and earlier patch level. I would recommend re-creating those.

If you are getting a crash when you setup a new one from scratch, document *exactly* what you did to produce the crash and email it to Malfador.

Start a fresh

I would always start afresh when a new patch comes out as there is a distinct possibility the game might not be backwards compatible. The other issue is that Balance Mod 0.97 was not compatible with version 1.17 but 0.98 is

I created a game with an empire file from a previous patch and it worked fine... I wonder if the problem is caused by empires saved during the game...

Yes it would be. The saved empire file would not contain one of the data additions added for empires in the v1.17 patch.

This was a brand new race

This was a brand new race and a brand new game. I repeated the crash once and then on the third try, everyting worked.
