Workaround for flashing fullscreen issue (and found the cause of it)

Submitted by Black root on Sun, 2006-11-19 15:56. Space Empires V General

I had the issue where fullscreen mode made the screen flash and since no fix showed up for more than a week and there was no indication that anybody were investigating this issue, I decided to make my own investigation.

It turned out that it is an issue of conflicting software, but not what I expected. The cause of this turned out to be a process called ccApp.exe. Killing this process makes the problem go away. The problem in that approach is that ccApp.exe is part of Norton Antivirus and killing it kills the background scans. The guestion is if it is Malfador or Symantec, who got the bug in their code. I have no way to tell.

Also the conflict only shows up when using hardware acceleration. Using software rendering made it go away as well, but 3 fps is not really playable/enjoyable Eye-wink

I don't have Norton

I don't have Norton antivirus, the flashing for me happened when I set the memory to sefa instead of auto. It stopped when I set it back to auto.

Setting video memory to safe

Submitted by Black root on Sun, 2006-11-19 17:42.

Setting video memory to safe or auto didn't change anything, neither did resolution, number of colours or details. Only killing this process fixed this. If this issue is really nasty, then it's a lot of unrelated issues all showing themselves in the same way. It's also possible that other processes can do this, and then there is nothing to do but trying to kill them one by one until the offending one is found (and then restart and kill the process to ensure that you got the right one).

I still wonder how background virusscans can make the screen flash like that.

It's not the virusscan

It's not the virus scan itself. The problem are the pop-up windows that some programs show, such as the ICQ and MSN notification windows. I do not use Norton, but my antivirus shows a popup window when receiving e-mails, and I bet Norton does the same.

Turning off all those popup windows should solve the problem, otherwise run the game in window mode.
