SEV UI Frustrations |
I always thought the SEIV UI was a bit kludgy, but it could be dealt with if one had patience. However, I have, so far, found the SEV UI to be a lot of work. It is even more frustrating than SEIV's and seems almost inimical at times. There has bee a huge amount of work done to improve the look of the game and to handily provide lots and lots of data about things in the game to the player so that he does not have to constantly refer to the manual. This is good. However, it is not easier to actually get things DONE. In the area of accomplishing tasks the UI is NOT intuitive. If one is used to mainstream games with their high-dollar development budgets which produce slick UIs where you can hover and click on things and have pop-ups appear with command options, then SEV is a real jolt. While it may be possible to design and build things, to order fleets and manage R&D, there are few options for doing so and they are too often hard to find. I still have not figured out how to queue R&D, which was a snap in SEIV. I enthusiastically recommend to Aaron that he work over the UI to make it friendlier and more flexible. I think the game would be more fun and that it would help the game find acceptance in a wider audience.

Improves with experience
You don't really queue research in SE:V... it's more of a fluid system where you are often researching areas concurrently.
While aspects of the UI remain clunky, there are lots of little features that help like the pop-up text or right-click menus. A lot of it is just getting used to the interface through playing then you'll be generally be fine.

Must say I really didnt like
Must say I really didnt like SEV's way of doing research.. but after going back to SEIV.. wow! I have come to be a big fan of the SEV method , and to see it all on one screen.. and determine by teasing some percentages around I can get 3 tech to land all on the same turn.. I really really like the new way a lot.
Only three
I have had all of the Intel Sub technologies levelling every other turn before now and given that you can research, research technology more easily and upgrade facilities more easily I also think SEV is better in this area than SEIV. The GUI also has sufficient similarities to SEIV that it’s easier to adapt if you have played SEIV.
One of my pet hates is major changes to the GUI between games so that I lose track of what I am doing

Que R&D
You don't "que" R&D anymore, its been changed over to a % system where you allocate a % of your research to a given item.
