Attack drones and Engines

largedarryl's picture
Submitted by largedarryl on Thu, 2006-11-16 16:08. Space Empires V FAQs

While playing my last game I was building some attack drones that I wanted to load onto a space station. So I was building my drone ship and strapped a bunch of ion engines to the ship.

Now here are my questions:
1)Does a ship need an engine to move while at combat? Does the number of engines affect how fast the ship can fly in combat or is it determined strictly by the ships size?

2)If the speed is determined by the ships size, does a combat drone/fighter need any engines if they are used only during combat?

System and Comabt Speeds

The speed of a vehicle in combat is determined by the movement amount it has (ie # of engines) and a setting with each vehicle entry in VehicleSizes.txt that determines how much a system movement point will count towards combat speed. Vehicles with no engines will not move in combat - although I think Drones in stock have a movement bonus built into their hulls so they might move a bit.

Thanks

That answers my question nicely. So it would appear that the maximum number of movement points a ship has in a sector (12 for a freighter with 12 engines) is equivelant to the movement during a battle (12km/s for a freighter with 12 engines).

In stock, yes. In mods that might be different.

Combat Speeds in Balance Mod

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Tue, 2006-11-21 14:25.

The system speed is equal to the combat speed for most vehicles in the Balance Mod with the exception of fighters. They move faster disproportionately faster in combat than system movement.
