What are the levels typically reached in a game?

Submitted by Fallen Haven on Thu, 2006-11-16 14:45. Space Empires V General

I have been looking through files a lot lately while modding them and seen quite high level requirements for quite a few techs. Does any game last that long that you can reach level 40 or more in any tech? I mean, how much can each level cost at that point since the cost increase each time? Anyone ever build a planet or star destroying weapon? Does anyone really need such weapon with the kind of damage high level fleets can do?

Star = boom fleet = dead.

Star killers are sometimes overkill, but not always. Why waste time attacking each heavily-defended colony one-by-one when you can blow them all away at once?

I guess i did not play that long...

Keeping Us Busy

Submitted by Omnius on Thu, 2006-11-16 17:42.

Fallen Haven,
I think they're trying to keep us busy with all the new levels of tech to research. I've noticed the game lasts longer now as the beginning is slower to build up with the new sight rules. Actually I think it's fine because as you expand and get all 3 colony types plus atmosphere converters you can really jack up every kind of production to awesome levels. I've noticed the increase when I jack up research facilities 5 levels before triggering the upgrade.

I guess you are right. I tryied a game in wich i started with several homeworlds... It's insane how much research/production you can do. It's also insane how many upgrades you can end up getting in a few turn Sticking out tongue.

I don´t know...

Submitted by Vagabond on Thu, 2006-11-16 19:07.

Well, the very first game i´ve played actually worked to a point. Believe me: There is nothing you can´t research in a few turns with 4.3 Millon points.
In SE:IV i normally used up 20 to 25 Jears to research the entire tree.
In SEV it took 26...

Do you have what it takes?

You must devote a lot of worlds to research... How many labs to get 4.3 millions RP?

Personally...

Submitted by Thy Reaper on Thu, 2006-11-16 19:46.

My biggest empire to date reached about 2.3 million research points per turn, with about 350 research labs at level 38 or so. I'd imagine he had 450-500 at level 45 or more.

The mathematics cultural achievement also helps.

Hi, Fallen,

It takes a lot but it isn't as hard as you might think. My beginning-game stragety involves putting about 90% of my research into upgrading the labs and about 90% of my planet space is devoted to research facilities.

About every second turn or so (at first, then later it's every turn) the research level goes up by one. And then I upgrade ALL my labs practically every turn through the Construction Queue function - does the whole universe with one click. It's not long before I have research points into the millions. Smiling

I would concur with that

Submitted by evilginger on Thu, 2006-11-16 20:20.

I managed to hit 100,000+ research points with the demo and with TL20 ish Research stations. Also with TL5 Mathematics the record was around 200,000

In the main game I hit two million quite quickly and left it at that because I needed to shift to other priorities due to a long war with an advanced AI empire. I have since won that war but I dont need to push reserch as I dont see any power out there to chalenge me

Yes, I've been at that point, also. Smiling But that's precisely where I shift back to a higher percentage of developing research AND put a fair amount into intelligence research.Eye-wink I believe that intelligence activities/efforts are probably the most underused feature in the game. It can really pay off bigtime!

I agree that Intelligence is a big part of the game that often gets overlooked or underestimated. With enough of an Intelligence lead over an enemy empire, I am able to ruin ever ship and eradicate its resource structure. I stunt its research and gain some of it for my own. I've even lost games to the AI because it had so much intelligence it was able to destroy nearly every ship I ever made in a few turns.

Don't you think it is a bit of a ballance issue? Especially since one of the victory condition is having 80% of the research done? Winning without truly fighting for it (i'm quite sure the AI can't keep up)?

Btw, in my Inter-Related Tech mod i'm working on, such strat would not work as easily. In fact i'm fixing about every issues like having cheap weapons becomming so powerful there is no point in researching the high end ones. I have also made thoses Theorical techs useful Smiling.

No, It's not a balance issue for me. I gather you're talking about 80% tech being a requirement for the "Quick Start" games, right. I don't play those. Instead, I create my own and the victory condition is simple - "last man standing!" Eye-wink

If you've ever played Stronghold (an *excellent* game, by the way) you'll recognize the words of the Pig: "Take no prisoners - everyone DIES!!!!!" Heh-heh-heh!

A reply

Submitted by evilginger on Fri, 2006-11-17 03:11.

At the point I got into that war I had approximately 300,000 Intetelegence points and something like TL 18 in intelegence as well as TL 5 -8 in the derived techs. My refocusing was on building new resource extraction planets and depot planets to support that war and the enlarged fleet.

My research effort shifted to improving weapons and ship technologies rather than spending 70% of my research out put researching research improvements I did still build research stations its just that I didn’t towards the front I concentrated on building them where they where not vulnerable and on gas giants which I researched colonization of to expand my resource base as a lot of those seemed not worth mining. I did not want to get in a position as I did quite a lot with SEIV where my economy went bankrupt supporting the war fleet
I found that I had enough research to get any thing I needed and didn’t have very quickly.

It took several years (*10

It took several years (*10 turns) at 4 million research per turn to get to sphereworld tech.
