Yah that review wasn't

Submitted by carlosjuero on Wed, 2006-11-15 15:37.

Yah that review wasn't really 'objective', it focused more on the bad parts then the good parts. The thing about spending '5-10 turns' exploring a new sector is true, but there is an option in game creation to turn that off.

SE5

Submitted by Phoenix-D on Wed, 2006-11-15 17:01.

SEV has quite a few issues.

The ones mentioned in that review weren't it. Sticking out tongue What do you want to bet he didn't include sensors on any of his ships?

What game did he review?

Submitted by evilginger on Wed, 2006-11-15 17:27.

Strange review not sure he was reviewing the game I have been playing. I have played GCII a lot as it filled my 4e addiction whilst waiting for SEV. I had lost my copy of SEIV in a house fire a couple of years earlier. It is a good game but the ship design system is very limited and fiddly you can get very pretty ships but I still find this too fiddly. I really don’t like the fact that you don’t get any input into battles, what is the point of naming ships and them gaining experience if you can’t protect them by sacrificing other non names ships to save them. The tech tree is far too short and I keep winning it by influence or alliance unless I turn off these options. Granted that GCII was less buggy on release but I have still played it out that took two years with SEIV and I would have gone back to it as SE like CIV one is a real classic. I still play Civ One and spoon coal into the boiler of t he 486 its installed on

hmmm...

Submitted by Kalin on Wed, 2006-11-15 17:49.

Hmmm... there's no reason to be so critical of this review. I thought the reviewer was pretty straight forward about it *shrugs*. Aside from missing the game option about the sensors, most of his other points seems correct about the stock SEV game. Think about it, would you recommend SEV to someone who isn't a hardcore 4X fan? When a typical game lasts a week, if not months, only those who are really into it would play this game anyways. Heck, the learning curve alone makes it required, there's just way too many things to do.

The only thing I think he really left out about the game is its incredible modding potential, which IMO is the major selling point for me. I may not recommend the stock game to everyone, but in a few months with some innovative modding, you bet I'll be going around bragging about it.

no review

Submitted by thedude on Wed, 2006-11-15 18:52.

No review at this stage is going to be overwhelmingly positive. I give most reviewers credit for noticing the potential and not slamming the game.

One thing that bugs me is how few reviewers mention the greatest things about this game:
Player Mods and Play by Mail

"I've never even tried a play by mail game" you say? Its not for everyone...just my opinion I guess.

Damn I can't wait for Monday.

lol

Submitted by DimmurWyrd on Thu, 2006-11-16 19:58.

I like his comparison to galciv2 Sticking out tongue I found that game VERY tedious for the most part. Then again I played large maps there too so it could be a very long time before anyone had the range to meet anyone else Eye-wink

I guess that's just a sign of the times... I want it all and I want it now... probably why the world is such a borked place eh? Eye-wink

but seriously... It takes a very different mindset to be able to handle a REAL strategic game because there is no instant gratification in strategy only in tactics... You can get that instant rush in a battle but not when planning the empires path to glory lol. I'd say that most games do NOT rate the "strategy" portion of their genre categorization simply because there isn't enough large scale strategic potential to fill a thimble let alone make a strategy game out of Sticking out tongue That's why I like the SE series because although it can be a bit tedious there IS a fairly decent strategic element to the game as well as the pure tactical one.
