How to create a (music) mod ?

col.kurtz's picture
Submitted by col.kurtz on Tue, 2006-11-14 03:31. Space Empires V FAQs

In order to have SE-V playing my favourite songs instead of playing the 15 standard songs I decided to create a “Music Mod”

I created a folder called “Music Mod” into the Game Types folder.
I put a .bmp picture (same size as the Standard SE5 one’s) and mod _definition.txt file inside this folder. Then created a Data folder where I pasted the Settings.txt file.
I edited this Settings file by modifying the music settings as follows :

Quote:
Number of Title Songs := 1 Title Song 1 Filename := Space_Empires_V_Title_01.mp3 Number of Main Songs := 5 Main Song 1 Filename := Song1.mp3 Main Song 2 Filename := Song2.mp3 Main Song 3 Filename := Song3.mp3 Main Song 4 Filename := Song4.mp3 Main Song 5 Filename := Song5.mp3 Number of Combat Songs := 4 Combat Song 1 Filename := Space_Empires_V_Combat_01.mp3 Combat Song 2 Filename := Space_Empires_V_Combat_02.mp3 Combat Song 3 Filename := Space_Empires_V_Combat_03.mp3 Combat Song 4 Filename := Space_Empires_V_Combat_04.mp3 Number of Finale Songs := 1 Finale Song 1 Filename := Space_Empires_V_Finale_01.mp3

Then I created a Music sub-folder in the Music Mod folder where I put relevant mp3 files (Song1.mp3 to Song5.mp3). I started the mod and….nothing. It seems SE-V is completely ignoring the modified Settings file and is playing the standard songs.

What did I do wrong ? Could somebody help ?

Did you...

Did you remember to put the settings file into the "data" folder (which you'd have to create).

Did you remember to start a new game using the option to play it as a "music mod" game? (And did the appropriate bitmap show up when you did so?)

Check the existing music folder, check and see if there are any sub-folders you jneed to deal with.

There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

YES. I did put it into the “Music Mod” data folder I created

YES (as the mod is named “Music Mod” it became the default game type, as they appear in alphabetic order on the list) and YES.

This means the SE-V engine does not ignore the fact it is a mod, it just seems to ignore the modifications in the Settings file.

No there a no subfolder in the Music folder I created (neither in the original folder anyway).

I played the music mod a bit

Submitted by col.kurtz on Wed, 2006-11-15 03:05.

I played the music mod a bit longer and realised that actually SE-V was taking (part of) my instructions into account : the computer randomly played the standard 15 Main Songs AND my 5 own songs as well. This is odd because the instructions of a mod are supposed to override those of the standard Settings file ? Aren’t they ?

Problem

Did you put the settings.txt file into a Data subfolder? Because it reads like you put it straight into the Music Mod folder, which won't work.

You guys may consider it unnacceptable but all I did was modify the original settings file and added the mp3's from my fav classical music CD and then of course copied them to the music folder and restarted my game. I have already heard 3 of my new tracks mixed in with the original tracks. I now have 28 main music files setup.

I did it this way since I already had a game going and didnt want to have to start a new one with a separate mod. Seems to have worked just fine.

you're right but i have a copy of the settings file off to the side so I could modify the new settings file with the same sort of changes I just made with hopefully little effort. Ahh, I did just remember I need to copy my mp3's to a safe place too. I renamed them specifically for this so I would need to preserve them as well.

Thanks!
