My screen is flashing when playing the game..?!?!

Submitted by PsiSoldier on Mon, 2006-11-13 14:48. Space Empires V General

Ok I justs started playing last night after getting the newest patch and everything was fine, but now today when I load it up my screen has this God Awful Flashing like as bright as lightning every five to ten seconds and it is REALLY giving me a bad headache, Ive tried changing the screen resolution and changing the 3D device under settings and I still get this horrible flashing, I dont know why I wasnt getting it before and I am now, I have rebooted my computer about 3 or 4 times too and nothing is helping to get rid of this.

If I were epileptic I'd have already had a siezure and even though Im not ive got a really bad headache now from it. Has anyone else had this problem before and know what to do about it?

Thanks.

Do you have any other games

Submitted by carlosjuero on Mon, 2006-11-13 15:00.

Do you have any other games you can test? It sounds like something is going wonky with your video card. I would test another game that uses DirectX and see if you notice any problems; the new patch adjusted some coding, I do not believe any graphics were affected (or the way graphics were called)

Similar problems

Submitted by Thy Reaper on Mon, 2006-11-13 16:01.

I have similar problem. I am currently running a desktop clock (ClocX), and it will occasionally try to take over the screen for a moment, causing the screen to flash white. SE:V takes the screen back over immediately and continues normally. This is most prevelant whenever an AI turn is done being calculated. If I play the game without ClocX running, I notice less flashing, so make sure you close any programs that may be trying to gain focus.

Kinda fixed it.

Submitted by PsiSoldier on Mon, 2006-11-13 17:26.

Well I tried changing the resolution for SEV to 16 bit instead of 32 bit and the flashing stopped. still dont know why it was doing it when it didnt do it before. and I had nothing else running.

If its doing it to you just try dropping it to 16 bit instead and see if that helps.

Honestly I cant tell a difference in the graphics anyway its not all that of a graphic intense game anyways.

But for the record my system specs are

XFX Geforce 7950 GT Extreme Edition
2 Gig Kinston Hyper X ram
AMD 4800+ X2
SB X-Fi Music Card

So its not like Im below spec or anything and I have all the latest drivers.

What is really causing it? Developers???

Submitted by Shakerfish on Mon, 2006-11-13 18:22.

I also have this problem. I feel like someone keeps taking my picture. I haven’t tried 16 bit maybe that will help, but I think a developers comment is warranted here.

Windows XP SP2
ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500
1.5 GB RAM

Thanks!

Safe mode

Submitted by Phoenix-D on Mon, 2006-11-13 22:57.

First thing to try, beyond updated drivers, would be setting the video mode to "Safe" instead of "auto". Launch SE5, hit Setup, click the change button next to Video Memory usage.

IIRC this problem has cropped up before, but I can't remember when or what exactly fixed it.

Possible cause

Submitted by Helker on Tue, 2006-11-14 00:41.

I think that the cause of the flashing screen is some window in the background that shows up. I mean the little windows over the tray icons: The MSN and ICQ "online alerts", and other similar popups.
