Medium Hull Construction Level 1 ???

Submitted by archenemy on Sun, 2006-11-12 16:06. Space Empires V General

Can't seem to get past level 1 in medium hull construction - at a research setting of 100% of 122000 research points available, it will still take 4.5 years to research this technology - what's up with that?

Any suggestions would be helpful since the largest ship i can construct is a light cruiser!

Did you get sabotaged?

Submitted by Fallen Haven on Sun, 2006-11-12 16:10.

If an enemy managed to sabotage your research, you will need an insane amount of research points to get the research going again... It sucks but that's how the game was made.

It is possible that my research was sabbotaged - is there a way to tell after the fact?

Check the news log

Submitted by evilginger on Sun, 2006-11-12 18:04.

You should check the news log as it will some times report the sabotage if your counter intelligence noticed it, but didn’t stop it. You might also find a lot of successful Intel ops against you on the empire status page though this won’t tell you what they did only how many succeeded and how many failed. The only way to fix it is to re do the research or to go back to a prior save and build up your counter Intel capacity to stop it before it happens.

I personally find Intel hits annoying as I do many other nasty things such as running out of resources, rioting planets and sneak attacks on colonies that can’t defend themselves, but its part of the game. The way round it is to expect it and prepare accordingly.

You didn't sign a treaty

You didn't sign a treaty that forbids you to do research did you?

Potential Explanations

Submitted by archenemy on Sun, 2006-11-12 23:22.

Potential Explanations Explained:

1. I did not sign a treaty - so that eliminates that possibility.
2. Sabbotage is a possibility, but if so, 3 years of research at 120 000 research points for each 0.1 year increment totals 3 600 000 research points - can this be correct??? I think that is more research points than i put in to researching the entire ship size tree thus far in the game - i've only got to level 1 of medium - light hull sizes!!!
3. If i was sabbotaged, it was early on in the game, because i have since built up my intellegence capability and therefore i can't go back into the log to find it - at least i don't think i can - the log only goes back 0.2 or so increments in time, and anything prior to that is gone.

I do appreciate your suggestions - but it still seems strange to me!

Actually

Submitted by Phoenix-D on Sun, 2006-11-12 23:57.

Actually the stock tech damage project deducts about a MILLION research points, if I remember right. So yeah, that's probably what happened.

Just a liiitle bit imbalanced, that.

1 million research

Submitted by archenemy on Mon, 2006-11-13 08:45.

1 million research points:

At 1 million research points it would take me 0.5 years to recover because my research "income" is 200 000 points per 0.1 year. That sounds reasonable to me as well - however, nearly 3.5 million research points makes it virtually impossible to recover - by the time I can research that much, my enemies will be far outpacing my other research such as weapons, defenses and so on.

Thanks again everyone!

Fallen Haven,
I certainly hope they fix this so that only the last increment of research on a project gets trashed. This total trashing of a research project series through sabotage is way too extreme.

Perhaps you got hit several times

Submitted by evilginger on Mon, 2006-11-13 09:42.

Perhaps you got hit more than once or each hit has a damage range and you rolled high rather than low. The other possibility is that you are not applying all your research points to the one objective. Check research in progress

I've had this happen to me too

Submitted by Iron Giant on Mon, 2006-11-13 10:05.

I've had entire tech fields "locked" because of a successful Intel attack against me. Seems a bit unbalanced to me, but there it is.

One way around it is to make a treaty with another race that gives you their tech, or make a tech swap to get what you need. Once you get to level 5 in Medium Hull tech, you can then put your research points into the next Hull size tech.

Tech sabotage -10M points not 1M

Submitted by Captain Kwok on Mon, 2006-11-13 10:28.

Tech sabotage actually subtracts 10,000,000 points!! - not 1M.

10 Million Research

Submitted by archenemy on Mon, 2006-11-13 12:56.

10 Million Research Points!

Ok - so assuming that i've fallen victim to tech sabbotage, and it's going to cost 10 Million research points to advance, if i now go hard at researching this tech and expend 100% of my research points each turn for 30 turns and achieve level 2, will level 3 drop back to the normal research points required, or will i be in the same situation for every new level in this entire tech area??? This is a huge question becuase if every new level will require this expenditure of research points, i've already lost the game! I would need to research to level 5 before i can begin to research the next largest ship hull size - so in other words, 4 more levels! At millions of points per level, this would be impossible, i think!!!

The only reason you would

Submitted by Dragagon on Mon, 2006-11-13 14:05.

The only reason you would need 10M RP for the next level would be because you got hit with another Tech destroy in the exact same field. otherwise you will be fine and you'll just have to put in another 10M in a different tech.

Ok, well i'm gonna give it a go then - i'll devote 100% of my research on this tech for 3.0 years, or less, until i've broken through, then we'll see what happens.

Many thanks to those of you who responded with ideas ... i'll post later whent i get through it to let you know the end result.

I finally did it!!

Well - to those of you who have been following this little saga of mine, i worked through the research last night, it cost about 2.4 years of 95% research to break through med-light hull level 2, but i made it, and level 3 was back to its normal research points requirement ... lesson learned, i guess next time, i'll make sure to generate enough intellegence points to protect myself against this type of sabbotage.

Thanks again everyone,

archenemy,
It's not just the intel points it's also the intel levels for each intel area. Pumping up points alone won't protect you if you don't pump up your intel espionage and sabotage levels. In this game it's really important not to fall behind the intel race.

Not just intel Points:

Thanks for the "heads up" omnius - i'll keep that in mind and make sure that i keep up work on the intel espionage and sabotage levels.
