Colonizing with conquered race?

Submitted by jacob4408 on Fri, 2006-11-10 14:48. Space Empires V FAQs

I'm running v1.13 with no mods. My native race is Oxygen breathers. As a result of my Intelligence efforts, one of my enemy Colony ships defected and came under my control. They are methane breathers so I used them to start a colony on a methane planet. So far so good but when I use that methane colony to build a colony ship, the crew shows up as being of my native race and they can only colonize oxygen plantes without using domes. I have also conquered a methand breathing race and same story there.

This leads me to ask if there is a way to colonize using non-native races so you can take advantage of more planets without domes?

btw, I'm completely new (1 week matter of fact) to the SE series so apologies if there is a simple answer I'm overlooking.

No I dont think so

The only way to colonise non native environments seems to be to research or other wise obtain the technology to do so. Immigrants in colony ships can create such colonies as you found but they don’t give you the technology. I am not sure if you gain technology on conquest but I don’t think you but that might just be me as I am a recovering SEIV Zenocidal maniac and have not conquered any races entirely in SEV. I keep getting my assault transports shot up or there escorts attack the planet and wipe the population out which necessitates recolonization

Utilizing your other populations...

That is not correct.

You can use the captured colony ship to colonize a methane planet - but in the default game there is an auto-colonization amount of 1M of your own people. However you set this to zero in settings.txt (in your data directory, the setting you want to change is automatic colonization pop.) or you can jettison (ie scrap cargo order) your own population from the colony and then your colony will become undomed.

Alternatively if the ship has a colony technology that you don't, you can analyze the captured colony ship and gain the colonization technology they have and build your own ships of that type.

It is

My post was based on what I managed to do in the demo and in the game I am playing 1.13 steam no mods an immigrant colony ship with an ice colony module enabled me to build a colony on a world. I can’t remember if it was domed or not in the demo as it was some games ago the one in the proper game isn’t domed probably because its conditions are listed as mild. I did not gain the tech and so ended up with one colony on a nice big ice world to back up the nasty little refuelling station on a small unpleasant rock and two single facility stations all of which where domed because of either lack of atmosphere or unpleasant conditions.

I didn’t take the thing apart because it didn’t occur to me to do so at the time or do anything less straightforward then giving the ship a colony order. In the same game I have captured three gas giant colonies but though they aren’t domed I likewise did not get the tech or any tech from the capture that I recall.

I did not fiddle with the games settings as suggested as I wanted to see what a stock game was like first and really am not that into modding yet. I had enough fun playing stock SEIV I never felt the need to mod that though I did play with scenarios by setting up an empire and then leaving it to Ai control whilst I played one of another empire as the barbarians as it where and things like that from time to time.

In the end I think what you posted extends my post as you have obviously done stuff I have not yet rather than contradicting it

In 1.13 with no mods, a colony ship with only non-native pop. in cargo will not add the 1M native pop. ( ship's crew ) anymore, when colonizing. FYI, this fix is in the history.txt file.

As you capture planets with pop. native to different atmospheres, you'll find that due to migration they will start to appear on those of your planets with compatible atmospheres. Some of those may have started as domed colonies and as prev. noted, by transferring out or scrapping the pop. of the incompatible races, you will be left with only natives and your colony becomes non-domed, which is highly desirable of course.

Planet types

Submitted by Rilbur on Fri, 2006-11-10 22:45.

Planet types are diveded into two classifications: rock/ice/gas, and the atmosphere. In order to colonize a planet, you need teh appropriate colony module (you only get your "native" module at game start) and some people to place on it.

Assuming I understand your question, the problem is you need an ice colony to colonize ice planets (or gas for gas), and all you have is rock.

There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Utilizing your Domed planets: SEIV vs. SEV

Submitted by raynor on Sat, 2006-11-11 21:50.

In SEIV, the first empire I went to war with was the empire that breathed the atmosphere that was on most of my large/huge domed planets. In SEIV, the only way to convert those to undomed was to capture a planet with, for example, Methane breathers, if you are an Oxygen empire. Then, you had to send your population transports around your empire removing your Oxygen breathing colonists and replacing them with the Methane breathing colonists.

Now, in SEV, it is SO much easier. Instead of capturing an enemy colony full of Methane breathers, you instead establish a treaty whereby they will migrate to your colonies. Then, you skip the transport ships and just go around to all of your colonies jettisoning your own people. This is SO much faster than sending transports.

I'm typically reluctant to do two-way migration with the AI because I don't want him doing the same thing I'm doing. Though, that's probably an unfounded fear. I doubt the AI is that smart yet.
