Curiosity: Impact of NWN2 release on SEV

Submitted by javaslinger on Fri, 2006-11-10 12:39. Off-topic & Casual Conversations | Space Empires V General

Is it my imagination or were these forums far busier prior to the release of NWN2? Neverwinter NIghts 2 for those who don't RPG (role playing game) Smiling

Myself it has been a good distraction until this game gets maybe one more patch and another balance mod version. Then I'll dive in with both feet....

By the way, this game is awesome even buggy. And Capt. Kwok rules!!

Spanks,

Javaslinger

Masters of Magic

Submitted by Gantoris on Fri, 2006-11-10 13:51.

Anyone remember an old microprose game Masters of Magic (i think that was its name)?

This sudden talk of fantasy on a 4x site made me think of that lil beauty, think Civilization meets Lord of the Rings meets Magic the Gathering.

You're not thinking Lords of Magic, are you? Was a cool game, but lots of problems IIRC.

I Remember Master of Magic

Great game, I loved to watch the little guys shooting their little bolts at each other.

Build up your forces of LOTR style armies and take down the bad guys.

Master of Magic is neat!

Submitted by Trithemius on Fri, 2006-11-10 17:07.

It's a pity that Master of Orion 3 did not do well, since that probably had some impact on whether or not we got a MoM2 as well.

Lords of Magic is not bad, but I think it had some troubles with the execution (and totally ridiculous exploits if you played as the Death nation...).

True enough...

Submitted by Gantoris on Fri, 2006-11-10 17:38.

Aye, something really went pair shaped with Moo3 i nearly broke down and cried like a little girl when i started playing that one. At the time Moo2 was probably my fav game of all time cept for maybe UFO: Enemy Unknown (another series that just went apeshit) and Fallout. Never been so dissapointed in all my life and that includes the Phantom Menace!

Would be ace to see someone to a faithful remake of MoM tho, very unique in the whole 4x genre and about time we saw its like again. Not heard of this Lords of Magic thingy tho... any good?

Made by the people that made Lords of the Realm (the original of which I loved!). Some nice ideas and a lot of different units, but not really well balanced I think. The Death nation was certainly not well balanced.

Submitted by ekolis on Fri, 2006-11-10 18:40.

You want a good fantasy strategy game? Try Dominions 3! It's got quite a learning curve but once you're over the hump there's an incredible array of spells and units to use! Laughing out loud

Age of Wonders and its

Submitted by MasterDave on Fri, 2006-11-10 19:23.

Age of Wonders and its sequels are fairly decent rip-offs of Master of Magic, and they even have decent multiplayer. The biggest thing that the game lacks is dynamic city locations and random maps a la MoM and Civ.

Is NWN 2 any good? I was thinking about getting it, but there are lots of good games out now.

UFO: Extraterrastrials

Submitted by Sabin Stargem on Fri, 2006-11-10 19:39.

Actually, it may be possible that there could be an commercial successor to UFO: Enemy Unknown. An game studio called Chaos Concepts is working on a game called UFO: Extraterrestrials, and judging from the preview video the game captures the concept intact. Check out the link below.

About Neverwinter Nights 2, I am eagerly awaiting my copy of that game. Looking at what has been said in forums and reviews, it probably is going to be an game that I would just love to play. As such, the likes of Space Empires V would be set aside for later playing.

Submitted by Scillion on Fri, 2006-11-10 20:01.

You beat me too it. I saw that game a while back, it seems to be a copy of the play style.

UFO was ground breaking (for it's time) and fun.

Bullets traveled in 3d. You could shoot a hole in a wall then kill the guys behind it.

Tell me this, do you remember the first flying saucer you incountered. Down right scary how the little guys appeared in the farm setting.

D2Drive

Submitted by Rilbur on Sat, 2006-11-11 22:06.

Just out of curiosity, how well does Direct 2 drive work? I think I may give it a try with NWN2... maybe.

A few things that worry me is if there's any difference between store-bought and d2drive versions, how will they handle my (probably frequent) redownloads, and (to a lesser degree) how long games take to DLoad...

I would have to say that HoMM 3 was one of the best turn based strat games I have played. I never got 4 but I gathered that 3 was more ppopular.

Played the demo for 5, seemed alright-ish.

Yeah but fallout in bethesda's hands? I am not optimistic.

Why does no one say they want a Planescape:Torment sequel (by sequel I mean done in a similar manner rather than being an actual PS:T 2).

Also a Homeworld 3 would be nice.

I seem to have digressed into non TB stuff...

Re: Curiosity: Impact of NWN2 release on SEV

Submitted by BlueTemplar on Sat, 2007-04-21 01:05.

I don't have a good enough graphic card to play NWN2 (and Supreme Commander Sad ) until someone make an Oldblivion-like patch for these games... (puhleeease!)

Command and Conquer 3 : Tiberium Wars on the other hand takes way too much of my time right now (damn those coompanies releasing their games before the exams!), and I don't play SE5 singleplayer anymore (which is still a big waste of time, even with the mods, though it got a lot better).

CnC3 looks like to me as one of the best RTS games ever made (might even beat Starcraft: BW, time will show). And I am REALLY impressed that my old computer is able to run it so smoothly, even when I max out the graphic options!

(I might even say it runs better than Se5, which has this annoying slowdown when chacking the colonies list when there are lots of them (>40), and slows down to a crawl when checking the ship details)

The problems I have is that the game can't run to more than 3/4-1/3 speed depending on the number of units in the game (but is still smooth!), and I have to recompress the in-game movies with Vurtual Dub in order to be able to watch them.
But I would have expected a LOT worse problems with a CPU at 1.3 GHz when the game asks for at least 2, and the other specs at the bare minimum.
