When I ALT TAB the game crashes to a white screen and I have to use the manager to shut it down. Any suggestions? This has happened with all versions.

Ok, the curiosity has finally pushed me to the limit here.
I gotta know - what does "SAFE" mean, technically, here? yeah, it solves our problems, but what are the problems caused by being "unsafe", and what would be any advantages to not running safe (assuming it actually works for you)?
