SEV version 1.13 and Balance mod version .95 |
Hi everyone.
Just a quickie, is anyone have long initial load times and stuttering in game when using the above versions together? I find when starting a quick game the initial setup of the game takes ages and then when I play I get a lot of hard disc accessing and stuttering within the game. When I use just the 1.13 patch I have no long load times and no stuttering. For me it seems to be a problem with Captain Kwoks balance mod. Anyone else with these problems?
Thanks for listening.

I also have this problem
I also have this problem with the mod.

Fleeing ships and way too long combats...
It's likely related to AI combat and fleeing ships. I'm working on some possible solutions to alleviate this.

I actually couldn't get the
I actually couldn't get the mod to start w/ .95 and 1.13 I got Can't find Script errors. Good luck

Balance Mod Issues
I'm not sure what's going on in your case, but it isn't normal behaviour for the mod. Try deleting the mod folder and re-installing it... I'd download it again from my site just to be sure you didn't get a corrupt download or something silly like that.
Barronsod - Haven't heard of that error with the mod. Have you used the mod before with no problems!

1.13 and Balance Mod .95 problem
I was using 1.13 and Balance Mod .95 combination for the first time Wednesday.
Here's the brick wall I've run into - it seems once I reached the research level of light cruiser and/or built my first light cruiser, whenever -any- of my ships attack an enemy planet, in tactical or strategic combat, my ships run away from the planet without firing a shot.
This will repeat until all the movement points for the ships are used up.
Quite frustrating.
A second issue, I think I unzipped and installed the Balance Mod correctly, but, whenever I start a new game I get a data file error telling me it can't find the file ......Space Empires\data\Mod_definition.txt
Once I close the box, I'm still able to choose the mod and start the game.
Have I overlooked doing something here?
Thanks, and thanks to Captain Kwok for his efforts.

Balance Mod Help
Did you give your light cruiser ships a strategy?
The Balance Mod should have a folder in the GameTypes folder. Check to see if Mod_Definition.txt is in the Balance Mod folder along with the readme and history files.

Hmmmm? Balance Mod
Did I give the ships a strategy? Not specifically.
Typically, I just chose attack and then pick the planet.
Attacks against planets were going fine.
Once I built my first two light cruisers I had - 1 LC making a solo attack, a LC and 2 DD's as a fleet attack and then I tried dropping the light cruiser and had the destroyers attack alone.
All had the run away result. With the solo LC attack I manually moved the LC into firing range of the planet but the firing command would not work. I will start a new game and see what happens.
As to my second issue, yes, the Mod_Definition.txt is in the Balance Mod folder with the other files.

victim of treaties again?
Do be sure you didn't sign some treaty that specified no planet attacks or something similar.

Check your LC Design
Check your light cruiser design - does it have a default strategy assigned to it? It seems to me like it doesn't - which would cause it to behave strangely.
Also check your light cruisers to make sure they have sufficient supplies or ordnance for their weapon.
You can also e-mail your save game to capt-kwok .at. rogers .dot. com and I can check it out.
Do you have any other folders in your GameTypes directory? The message might actually be pertaining to a folder in that directory that doesn't have the mod_definition file.

I will try to email....
Thanks Captain Kwok,
I will try to email the saved game to you.
My Gametypes folder has five folders in it.
One is the Balance Mod folder.
the other four are -
Data
Standard SE5
Empires
Pictures
which I believe (and hope) are the normal folders that should be there for a standard SE5 1.13 game.
Nope
Actually the only folders you want in there are Standard SE5 and any mods you have installed- in this case the Balance Mod. The other folders are just wasting space.

It sounds like someone
It sounds like someone extracted a zip with mod folders into the GameTypes rather than into the specific mod folder

I wish all problems were......
Thanks for the help.
I deleted the three extra folders and the file data error has vanished.
I wish all computer problems were that easy to solve.
One quirky problem down, one strange combat problem to solve.

Using Mods
Maccca41,
When a mod says to select it, you are already in SE5. You select to make a new game and a dialog will pop up asking which "Game Type" you wish to use. select "Balance Mod" at this point and you will have a game running that mod.

Combat problem actually Treaty quirk.......
Okay,
I picked up the game where I left off (I forgot to select autosave when I first started, so I had longer to go back)
I finally came across the quirk where my ships start running away while attacking enemy planets.
As a fluke, I poked around one of my ships while waiting for the attack clock to run out. The status section said - No planetary bombardment!
It appears that treaty elements from one empire are being applied to another empire that I am at war with.
ie: no planetary bombardment (a most inconvenient way to fight a war)
Treaties
When you sign a treaty that you won't bombard planets, you're not saying you won't bombard that race's planets, youre saying you won't bombard *any* planets. Be careful what you agree to.

Have you tried defraging you
Have you tried defraging you hard disk Maccca41? I would suggest trying a straight defrag and see if that helps, if not un-install SEV and delete all relevant folders (unless you want to save games in which case move them somewhere else), then defrag again and try reinstalling then with yet another defrag at the end.
It could just be that your HDD is in a mess and where it has installed the mod files has ended up with them really badly shuffled. Or it might be that you have a bad cluster or sector on your HDD and the files are on that, XP should be smart enough with the help of a defrag to pick out bad sectors and not use them, (you might loose a couple of MB of hdd space if this is the issue).

I haven't noticed what you
I haven't noticed what you say, but who knows!
Only the player placement bar looks grow slower when creating a game with 0.95BM, but nothing else, sorry
