My opinion so far

Submitted by Helker on Wed, 2006-11-01 20:32. Space Empires V General

I would like to give my opinion on the game regardless of the bug still present, which will be addressed in future patches.

Game Setup & Empire Creation

The setup of the game offer some more option, but the empire creation is somewhat more rigid than it was in SE4. I really like that we are able to pick our starting techs as we were in SE3, that's really great, but I prefer how the Empire skills were managed in SE4 since now there is not much choice. I also like that you can choose the portrait and ship set separately.

Research

Tech trees are HUGE! That's wonderful! Laughing out loud
Some technologies, though, are MUCH cheaper then they were on SE4. Colonization and Intelligence are just two of them... I think that the default research cost should be set at "High" at this point...
The concept of "infinite research" is also great, I really like it Smiling
I also like that the te research is back as it was on SE3, I think that's much better

Intelligence

This is the aspect I Like less. In SE4 I could select several different Intelligence projects against one or more Empires. In SE5 I can chose one generic "field" for my Intelligence Projects, without much control over it...

Combat

That's one of the best improvements of the game, the combats are really exciting, but I think that they need at least one improvement:

  • Space Stations NEED to be orbiting around planets.

Ship Design

I love this Ship Design method Smiling
One thing that I would add is the concept of "Firing Arc" that was present in StarFury.

Graphic

The graphic is really nice, but the icons over the planets are a bit too big, and if several planets are close together it can become quite messy.
I like the hex also, they are much better than the squares Eye-wink

Overall

My overall opinion is that this is a great game Laughing out loud

in SEIV tactical combat you

Submitted by Arius32 on Thu, 2006-11-02 08:31.

in SEIV tactical combat you could change the fleet formation during the battle, can't find the same thing in SEV , one of the resons i could always beat higher numbered opponents was that i design my ships and give them combat roles in a fleet, i usually did that manually in SEIV, can't do that in SEV , only option i have is to break the formation and pause/reorder tilll combat lasts for 30 minutes real time!!! gah! neeed 2 buttons .. (1) change formation (2) tighten formation. , and some visual marker for who the leader of the fleet is, and each individual task force too Smiling

tonnage in SEV is very good in my opinion, neo-shipsets are a bloody relic now, only thing that could be added is that pressing "upgrade " would separate components/tonnage/crew/Engines and not create a frigate that has 200 crew members when it only needs 50!

WEAPON ARCS are imperative since combat has become 3D ..

my 2 bits

Ship Design: I would love

Submitted by Redbull102 on Thu, 2006-11-02 11:13.

Ship Design:

I would love to see a large middle deck, and smaller upper/ lower decks.
