Space Empires V FAQs
How do you attain enemy ship designs? I thought you would get them through combat, but the designs I have are way behind what I have faced in combat.... I know you can get them from allies, but outside of that, how do you get them on a normal game basis?

If I remember right, you just have to capture enemy ships, then take them back to one your planets with an shipyard. An option should appear, allowing you to dismantle the ship for research. Mind you, it has been a while since I played Space Empires IV, and I am not sure if that experience applies to Space Empires V.
EDIT: You can also just look at captured ships, since they are yours.
