A somewhat new complaint about Fleets/Combat |
Am I the one person who doesn't like the Fleets? I'm not talking about the ordinance bug. Fleets themselves. They tick me off, they save a little time moving around a few ships but in combat they are annoying and get my ships killed so much easier.
I personally like the scattered, formationless, and independent movement of combat with out fleets. Taking my ships out of fleet formations is way too hard and seems to rarely work. Plus I like being able to break my ships off at a momments notice (I often have my ships go head into battle but right before I'll split them off around the sides of the enemy and surround them. Plus the fast movement on the sides does seem to greatly increase the chance of miss for the enemy ships. Im sure I can do this with Fleets but its too much hastle. After some of the severe bugs are fixed up I'd like to see a little improvement on combat (Though it is freaking awesome already).
I would like to see a 'tail this ship' command added. To catch those pesky fleeing ships I often make some fighters, send them into battle and set them to split up and ram each ship. Then I need to watch them all sorts of closely to make sure they are in range and not close enough to ram the ship, then I need to manually change their destination to keep them firing. Its quite a hassle but works better than anything else.
Oh yeah, someone once said that you can prearrange the possition of your ships before combat starts. I can't figure out how to do it. Is this true, if it is how do you do it?

Drop Formation at 150% Range
I agree that currently, the distance between ships often renders larger portions of my fleets useless in an engagement. What I would like is to be able to tell my task forces to drop out of formation and converge on target at 150-200% of the lead ship's attack range. That would be very useful and make fleets a viable option.

With all these people, you would expect one of them to carry an iguana around...

Break Formation
You can also set your ships to break formation and they will follow their ship strategies instead.

Breaking Formation / Balance Mod Updates
I haven't experimented too much with break formation in the strategies themselves, but usually as issued through the tactical combat interface. It seems to work ok.
There will probably be a v0.94 release for the Balance Mod on Friday and then a ready to go v0.95 for Patch Day.

same problem
as posted before, methinks 2 new combat options would do, (1) tighten formation (2) change formation.
the showsector is good as long as you dont have 50 ships there lol!
wonder if anyone could write a formation editor? it's a huge hassle to edit the formations files manually.
just in case i'm not clear , GREAT WORK Everyone

20000 ship limit!! , bummer

I still like Fleets, but I
I still like Fleets, but I would love to add a suggestion about the combat: How about the ability to double click on a specific hull type and/ or design type and have all the same hull types/design types become highlighted!
There is nothing more aggravating than trying to micromanage multiple fighters, or a dozen of the same hulls, when all I should have to do is double click one and have all fighter/hulls/designs of the exact same configuration become automatically selected so I can give the same order to the whole group at once. It's a very popular concept in real time strategy that could work under the SE5's new combat system right?
After all, I design my ships and fighters to accomplish specific tasks, it should naturally follow that I would want to be able to double click that specific unit and have them all respond so I can send them to perform those specific tasks.
This would go a long way towards being able to create task forces on the fly and send them off to do particular jobs.
If there is already a way to do this just please be kind in telling me about it. I will feel like a big enough dumbass for not having know about it.

Grid & Eyball
To arrange your ships before combat, select the sector that contains your ships, then click on the Sector View icon. Its located at the upper right of the Ship List/Information window (the center of the three windows at the bottom of the screen). It looks like an eyeball floating over a grid.
Once you're in the sector view, you select a ship by left clicking it and place the ship by left clicking again. Right clicking while the ship is selected will rotate the ship.
Tragically, there is no way to select multiple ships at one time. This is a major PITA with large fighter groups...
